Tired of cleaning up after your cat? Fed up with having to scoop up messy waste and refill the litter box all the time? Of course you are!

After a long day of work, the last thing you want to do is deal with the litter instead of snuggling with your precious furball on the couch. And there’s nothing shameful in admitting it.

Unfortunately, flushable or clumping cat litter and litter mats just won’t do the trick for you anymore, and you just want something new, something automatic, something that will take care of the nasty business for you. And here’s where automatic and self-cleaning litter boxes come in handy.

Many cats have problems with adjusting to new litter boxes or trays, and it may take a while for them to stop peeing or pooping outside the box. If your own kitty happens to be one of those cats, don’t deprive yourself of the convenience of getting a self-cleaning appliance just because you think your pet won’t start using the new item.

Some pet parents prefer potty training methods instead of using a traditional litter mat or box, but it’s better to not try this, as all felines have a natural instinct to bury their urine and feces.

So instead of forcing your furry pet to start using the actual toilet, let’s take a look at the best automatic and self-cleaning cat litter boxes on the market these days.

#1. Litter Robot III Open-Air Automatic Litter Box (EDITOR’S CHOICE)

LITTER ROBOT III LARGE

If you thought automatic and self-cleaning cat litter systems looked like something that came out of a futuristic sci-fi movie, then you won’t be disappointed by the appearance of the Litter Robot III Open-Air.

This is the top product on the market right now and even though its price might seem a bit high at first, just wait until you find out the wonders it can do for you and for your precious furball!

Litter Robot III Open-Air is a fully automatic self-cleaning system which will fit any cat, regardless of its breed and size – from the tiny Munchkin to a grown-up Maine Coon. The large entryway is specially designed to offer comfort and safety for your cat, and the extremely durable construction is manufactured to withstand the tests of time, wear, and tear.

The system automatically cleans the cat’s waste 3, 7, or 15 minutes after it has detected that your pet has left the machine – depending on the settings you choose. The litter chamber then rotates, carefully dumping the clumps of used litter into a special waste container, and then rotates back again to offer the clean, leveled-out litter for your kitty’s next bathroom break.

It has a lockout option in order to prevent children from messing up the settings, and also comes with a nightlight option if you happen to own an elderly cat with eyesight problems. Last but not least – the machine also indicates when the waste compartment is full so you won’t need to constantly check up on it.

Basically, this is the Ferrari of self-cleaning boxes. It does it all, it’s elegant, it’s comfortable for the cat, and you have to do the least amount of work imaginable. Win-win-win.

I have tried so many of these things now thanks to the blog (you should see the piles of cat stuff I have in all sorts of weird places around my house), and honestly I felt bad that I loved this one so much since I would have to recommend it over a cheaper alternative.

But, there you go. I have to be honest!

If you average out the cost over a few years, you’re still getting a heck of a deal since you don’t have to deal with the horrible task of scooping litter anymore!

And actually, you can literally average the cost out over a few years, since they offer financing options.

Aaaand if you need more convincing, you can get $25 off a Litter Robot III through our link below.

(There’s a new, even more high-tech version that runs with an app, giving you insane amounts of control, but I’m always a bit wary of app-controlled pet devices. If you want the best of the best and newest tech stuff, click here to take a look at the app-powered version with $25 off.)

#2. PetSafe’s ScoopFree Automatic Litter Box

ScoopFree

PetSafe’s products are undoubtedly among the top pet-friendly cat products out there whether if it’s treats, harnesses, training tools, or other types of cat- and dog-related items.

The ScoopFree self-cleaning litter box is probably the most popular automatic litter systems, and it is surprisingly budget-friendly, regardless of the various advantages it has next to your typical litter tray.

For starters, the machine comes with special crystal litter which absorbs urine and removes any nasty odor by dehydrating the kitty’s waste. The crystals last for weeks and they don’t need daily maintenance.

The system features an automatic rake which sweeps through the used litter 20 minutes after the cat has done its business in order to push the waste into a designated compartment equipped with a trap cover, which prevents the odor from spreading in your home.

There are two options for the crystals – the fresh scented blue ones that are packaged with the machine, or lilac ones, which are mildly scented with lavender.

And last but not least, a special privacy hood that matches the machine’s design is also available (not included), which allows your kitty to have some privacy while doing its business.

The hood and the extra litter does end up adding up, since you need to buy refill trays that fit the machine, it’s not just any random litter that fits in there.

So while it’s not a huge investment up front, it definitely costs a bit more to maintain.

#3. CatGenie Automatic Litter Box

Cat genie

What if your cat had a flushable toilet instead of a litter tray just like us, humans? Wouldn’t that be cool? Well, the people who designed CatGenie probably had that very same idea.

CatGenie is a stunning self-washing, self-flushing machine that resembles an actual toilet bowl. In fact, even its mechanism works like your real-life toilet bowl.

This product works with special washable litter granules instead of your typical clay litter and it actually scoops and throws away the waste, then washes, flushes, and dries the rest of the granules all by itself! All you need to do is plug it in an electrical outlet, followed by connecting it to a cold waterline, then attach it to a drain pipe – and the machine will do everything else from there on.

Ok, so that’s actually a fair bit of work for just adding a litter box to your home, let’s be honest.

But it’s super hygienic and actually kind of cool.

If you’ve got one or two cats, this should be an effective unit, which is pretty standard for these appliances.

On the contrary – it removes odor and sanitizes the biodegradable litter granules all by itself. Furthermore, it doesn’t require constant refilling or cleaning on your behalf.

#4. LitterMaid Automatic Litter Box

Litter Maid

The LitterMaid is pretty good for handling all sizes of cats, and we included it because it’s very standard in design, can work well, and is quite a bit cheaper than our other recommended options.

However, I didn’t love that it was all made of plastic, as it had trouble with some of the larger clumps of litter. The rake tines and the movements are too reliant on plastic bits for my liking.

There are a lot of work arounds I found posted on Amazon by other people who have this, so if you’re looking for a cheaper option, and you’re willing to put the time into it, you can definitely make a few modifications and get this thing working perfectly!

It just wasn’t quite for me or my kitties.

It has a total of four waste compartments, all of which are equipped with carbon filters to reduce the unpleasant odor. On top of that, the LitterMaid also has a special paw cleaning ramp which can help catch any dust or litter particles off your cats’ paws.

The system is automatically set to wait 10 minutes before the scooping process starts and it also comes with its own back-up battery in case your electricity suddenly cuts out (which to be fair, I do love the idea of).

Lastly, there’s an option which allows you to manually use the detachable and easily cleanable rake, but honestly this does not inspire confidence! I just want it to work, you know?

#5. PetSafe’s Simply Clean Automatic Litter Box

Petsafe Simply Clean

This appliance is not only affordable, but it’s also quite efficient for smaller cat breeds when it comes to keeping things clean, fresh, and odorless.

Simply Clean is user-friendly and while it takes some time to attach and set up, its detachable parts are quite easy to clean and maintain. The waste compartment is semi-transparent, making it easy for you to check whether it needs to be emptied.

It operates on a low-voltage system, limiting the motor’s noises to a minimum, which makes this self-cleaning litter box the perfect choice for shy, anxious felines. Furthermore, due to its efficient mechanism, the machine works with less clumping litter supplies than a standard litter box, saving you money on litter refills.

The litter tray is best suited for small to medium-sized cats and the motor runs so slowly that it makes only one full rotation over the course of an entire hour. In other words, it won’t scare off your kitty, regardless of how small or fearful it is.

Last but not least – the Simply Clean system is constructed in such a way that no visible parts are moving so that they won’t accidentally catch your pet’s paw or tail while it’s doing its business.

Now, that’s all well and fine, but this thing is absolutely prone to the motor dying.

A brilliant idea is to hook it up to one of those wall-plug-timer things that turns the lights or whatever you plug into it on at certain times of the day, but keeps it off otherwise.

If you plug this in and have it set to run twice per day for one hour at a time, it will save energy and also not burn the motor so fast.

Orrrr, you could just buy a better unit. Our #1 or #2 picks are much better, though we wanted to give you a fair idea of how this one performs, in case the cheaper price tag enticed you.

Should you buy an automatic litter box?

Chances are you won’t regret swapping your good old litter tray for an automatic self-cleaning machine, if said machine is of high quality. Even if you don’t mind cleaning after your fluffy feline pal, you’ll immediately notice the difference in comfort and convenience which the automatic self-cleaning litter box provides.

Of course, you shouldn’t expect your kitty to immediately transition from its old litter to the new machine without some accidents on the carpet or on the ground during the transitioning process.

Allow your cat to get familiar with the new litter, encourage it with positive reinforcement techniques, and if necessary, spray the self-cleaning litter box with some catnip. Once your kitty starts associating the new item with a positive experience, it will transition to the new litter box.

Truthfully, automatic and self-cleaning cat litter boxes are not only easier to maintain, but they also do wonders for reducing waste odor. They save you time and money and significantly reduce the disgusting factor of having to constantly clean up after your pet.

As long as you allow your furball to adjust to the new litter, and as long as you manually clean and maintain the electronic appliance on a regular basis, you’ll have one less house chore to worry about in your everyday routine.
