Iām always skeptical of fads, and rarely even bother researching them.
But the number of people I know who use CBD oil for their health ā with reported improvements ā convinced me that I should look into it, especially for a certain young kitty I know who struggles with extreme separation anxiety whenever I leave the house for even an hour.

CBD oil seems to be the latest miracle drug option for humans, dogs, cats, and other mammals.
If youāre anything like me, you want the whole breakdown on what this stuff is all about so you might want to check out my in-depth article on CBD oil, health benefits, downsides, and more.
For a quick run-down before getting into the reviews of my top five choices, however, here are the basics you need to know for choosing the right CBD oil for your cat.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD oil is short for cannabidiol, an oil that comes from the cannabis plant. CBD oil is made from the same technical plant, but not the same strain of cannabis that marijuana comes from.
CBD-grade strains have low levels of THC ā tetrahydrocannabinol ā the aspects of cannabis that gives mammals that āhighā feeling that pot gives. However, these strains do have CBD, which is one part of the hemp plant that offers the health benefits that ease symptoms of disease, pain, and illness.
CBD is not marijuana and does not cause psychoactive episodes.
CBD oils contain high concentrations of the extracts from hemp plants that are beneficial for therapeutic purposes. Cannabis has been used for millennia to treat a wide range of ailments including anxiety disorders and cancers.
A lot of people are confused about the differences between CBD and CBD hemp oil for cats.
Dr. Jim Carlson of Riverside Animal Clinic in McHenry, Illinois, tells us that:
āCBD is derived from the flowers of the hemp plant⦠Hemp comes mainly from the stem of the hemp plant⦠Hemp oil contains very few cannabinoids. There is also a product called hemp seed oil which is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant which do not contain CBD. CBD does not contain THC.ā
CBD hemp oil has some of the same health benefits as CBD oil, but not all.
How We Chose the Best CBD Oil for Cats
What makes CBD oil beneficial, useful, safe, and healthy for cats? I asked several experts on the subject and then researched a variety of things on the topic myself. I learned the ins and outs of what CBD oil is and what makes it safe and useful.
So, when I decided it was time to find the best products available, I used that knowledge to search out the best options. I had some favorite brands in mind but sadly discovered that some of them did not meet my standards. Others that I had never heard of before came up in my searches.
I found reviews and favorites from other cat owners and experts and had a list of about 20 highly recommended options. I shaved this list down to only those that met all of my standards.
These standards include:
- All-natural ingredients
- Naturally/food-grade processed
- Certified organic
- Full-spectrum CBD products
- 0% THC
- Third-party tested for potency, purity & honesty
From this list, I had these 5 options left that I could fully recommend.

The fine mist of the spray allows a lighter coating of the CBD onto the food, in contrast to the heavier concentration that tinctures leave.
So, I kind of love this CBD.

The Peaceful Buddy formula from Givol is a unique CBD option with additional infusions that target specific issues including separation anxiety, joint pain, and stress. That means this may be especially great for older cats ā or Lady Stardust who freaks out whenever her pets leave for even an hour!
Givol offers all-natural, naturally extracted ingredients in their CBD for cats, so Iām happy to recommend them, especially in this particular product that has valuable additional supplements.
It contains zero THC, meaning no high for Kitty Couric, and is a full spectrum choice which means it has the additional benefits of other parts of the hemp plant for cannabinoids like CBG and terpenes.
Peaceful Buddy also infuses in some powerful herbal supplements to help Kitty rest and relax better.
Chamomile is something many of us are familiar with in tea form. Itās a great beverage for winding down with at night before sleep. But there are other benefits that chamomile offers, including:
- Help with stomach ailments
- Mild sedative to calm nerves
- Heartburn relief
- Relieve vomiting
- Relieve nausea
- Prevent or treat diarrhea
- Ease mouth sores
- Fight skin infections
- Fight insomnia
- Relieve anxiety & stress
- Ease hemorrhoids
- Treat skin irritation
- Wound healing
Some of these benefits are through a topical application so you may want to use this CBD product for skin irritations, for example.
Frankincense is the other supplement added. Admittedly, I wasnāt sure what good this particular oil would offer, so I started studying. I discovered that frankincense was so valuable in ancient times because of the incredible healing powers it holds. Frankincense can help with any of the following issues:
- Helps reduce pain & inflammation
- Aids sleep
- Reduce stress & negative emotions
- Boost immune system
- Prevent illnesses
- Antibacterial
- Fight cancer
- Helps with Chemotherapy side effects
- Heals skin
- Helps balance hormones
- Improves memory
- Eases digestion
All-in-all, this is a great product for any kitty who has these issues. However, for a cat not needing sedative properties, I would not recommend it, which is why itās lower in the rankings. It is not as āall-purposeā as other options.
Note: I believe this to be the best CBD oil for catsā aggression.

Does CBD Oil Contain THC?
The very first thing Iād like to reiterate here is that high-quality CBD oil has zero THC in it.
CBD is a bit like chamomile or catnip which provides a mild sedative-like effect for cats. And, like both of those, CBD cannot get Garfield high.
There is zero THC in good-quality CBD, and therefore there is no āhigh.ā
Cheap and impure brands of CBD oil will have THC, so be sure to always avoid these. While your cat may have anxiety and stress issues, she doesnāt need a psychoactive episode.
What is CBD Oil Good For?
Dr. Jennifer Coates, DVM, and advisor to Pet Life Today told me in an interview that:
āCBD shows promise for treating inflammatory conditions, like osteoarthritis, as well as for anxiety, seizures, pain, and nausea.ā
Dr. Jeremy Riggle, Chief Science Officer for Maryās Whole Pet elaborated slightly in another interview that:
āCats have their own endocannabinoid system so they can benefit from CBD oil much the same way humans do. Specific ailments include, but are not limited to: loss of appetite, anxiety, stress, inflammation ⦠arthritis, etc.ā
All of this means that CBD oil for cats works much the way it does for humans. The best CBD oil for cats with kidney disease or the best CBD oil for cats with cancer will have a similar effect on cats that the high-quality stuff does for human patients with the same ailments and diseases.
Other ailments that CBD can directly help with include:
- Seizures
- Aggression
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Inflammation
- Pancreatitis
CBD oil generally helps with overall health improvement as well, which is why many folks give their cats low dosages on the regular, even if Fluffy doesnāt have one of the mentioned conditions.
What is the Right CBD Oil Dosage for Cats?
Several experts in the realm of CBD and pets have noted that the correct dosage is one of the most important aspects of giving your cat CBD oil. For example, Dr. Gary Richter, Medical Director of Holistic Veterinary Care in Oakland and Veterinary Health Expert with Rover.com, said that paying close attention to dosage is important because you donāt want to overdose your cat.
Too low a dosage, however, will render it ineffective. Itās harder to underdose, though, unless youāre using an inferior product that contains more additives and fillers than actual CBD oil.
Thereās honestly not much research on the subject of CBD and cats ā at least not yet ā so thereās no distinctive answer that can be given across the board.
However, most companies provide a recommended number of drops per dose based on body weight.
The general understanding, thus far, is that doses between 0.1 and 0.5 milligrams per kilogram of weight of the cat are probably the best range.
Itās recommended that you start at the lower end of the spectrum and work up to higher doses, though, to make sure your cat doesnāt have an adverse reaction to CBD. Itās always best to start low and increase the dose based on the desired outcome,ā Dr. Riggle notes.
Itās also possible that your cat wonāt show any marked improvements or responses to CBD either, so, again, itās best to start with lower doses to avoid waste.
Be consistent as you test CBD for your cat, as well. This will give you a clearer picture of how well Fluffyās doing ā or not doing ā based on the dose and frequency.
The Best CBD Oil for Cats Arenāt Hard to Find Now
Now that you know what kind of CBD oil to look for, and which are the best CBD oil for cats with anxiety, the best CBD oil for catsā seizures, and more, you shouldnāt have any issue purchasing some today.
I truly believe these five options Iāve provided are the best in the market and are the most likely to help your catās mental and physical health. But donāt just take my word for it. Do the research and study the materials for yourself. Your catās health is way too important to mess around with.
This is a wonderful, informative post! I have often been questioned about whether hemp products I use such as hemp seed oil and hemp milk are safe and how they relate to the marijuana plant. I never knew the answer to these questions except to say that they are a different part of the plant that doesnāt contain THC. Now I truly understand the difference! Thank you
Thank you for the review Emily! Great research and very thorough, glad to see SavageCBD mentioned, that is a great product!
Thanks for listing the CBD products options for pets! Good to know that there are organic CBD’s for pets too!
